Why Storage Matters for Lithium Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries are remarkably energy-dense — which is exactly what makes them so useful and so dangerous when mishandled. Improper storage is one of the leading causes of lithium battery fires, particularly for e-bikes, power tools, and consumer electronics. Even batteries that appear undamaged can develop internal faults over time that make them susceptible to thermal runaway.

Following proper storage guidelines significantly reduces the risk of fire and extends the life of your batteries.

General Lithium Battery Storage Guidelines

1. Store at the Right Temperature

Lithium batteries should be stored in a cool, dry environment. The ideal storage temperature is between 15°C and 25°C (59°F–77°F). Avoid:

  • Direct sunlight or heat sources (radiators, hot vehicles)
  • Freezing temperatures, which can damage cell chemistry
  • Garages or sheds that experience extreme temperature swings

2. Store at a Partial Charge

For long-term storage (more than a few weeks), lithium batteries should be stored at approximately 40–60% charge. Storing at 100% charge for extended periods accelerates degradation and increases the risk of thermal events. Storing at 0% can cause irreversible damage to cell chemistry.

3. Keep Away from Flammable Materials

Store lithium batteries away from paper, cardboard, fabric, wood, and other flammable materials. If a battery does enter thermal runaway, nearby combustibles will dramatically accelerate the fire.

4. Use Dedicated Storage Containers

For high-value or high-risk batteries (large e-bike packs, power tool batteries, drone batteries), consider using a dedicated lithium battery storage bag or fireproof cabinet. These are designed to contain a thermal event and prevent it from spreading.

5. Inspect Batteries Regularly

Before storing and periodically during storage, inspect batteries for:

  • Swelling or bulging of the casing
  • Cracks, dents, or physical damage
  • Corrosion on terminals
  • Unusual odour

Any battery showing these signs should be removed from service and disposed of safely at a certified battery recycling facility.

6. Never Store Damaged Batteries

A battery that has been dropped, crushed, punctured, or exposed to water should never be stored indoors. Even if it appears functional, internal damage may not be visible and can lead to thermal runaway days or weeks later.

7. Ensure Adequate Ventilation

Store batteries in a well-ventilated area. If a battery begins to vent gases (a precursor to thermal runaway), ventilation reduces the risk of gas accumulation and ignition.

EV-Specific Storage Guidelines

Parking and Overnight Storage

  • Avoid parking EVs in enclosed garages immediately after a long drive — allow the battery to cool first
  • Do not charge EVs to 100% unless needed for a long trip; regular charging to 80% reduces stress on the battery
  • If possible, park EVs away from other vehicles and structures when charging overnight
  • Install smoke and heat detectors in any garage or facility where EVs are stored

Fleet Storage Facilities

  • Maintain adequate spacing between vehicles to prevent fire spread
  • Install automatic fire suppression systems rated for lithium battery fires
  • Ensure staff are trained in lithium battery fire response
  • Keep AVD extinguishers accessible throughout the facility

What to Do If a Stored Battery Shows Warning Signs

If you notice swelling, heat, unusual odour, or smoke from a stored battery:

  1. Evacuate the area immediately
  2. Call emergency services
  3. Do not attempt to move the battery
  4. If safe to do so and the fire is in its very early stages, deploy an AVD Fire Blanket to contain it
  5. Use an AVD Extinguisher only if you have been trained to do so and can do so safely
